The Importance of Being a Good Dad


Growing up without a dad is not the best for any child. If a dad is absent from a child's life they miss out on having a manly influence for boys as well as girls. The mom has to step in and try to be both mom and dad but a lot times it is too hard. The influence is different for each gender because each person's needs are different. Being without a dad gives the child a view on males that is usually bad. The child spends their life fighting to find the male role model. Hopefully they will find someone who has a good influence on them. If the male role model has a bad influence on them the results can be devastating.

Many people believe that women marry men that resemble the male influence growing up as a child. So what about the little girl whose dad is not around? A little girl growing up without a father or a dad who is not good tries to find love in all the wrong places. If the mom is not able to guide the child completely because she is working to provide then other influences come in. The influence comes from television, music and peers. It could even come from other family members. If no one teaches the child right from wrong then she is likely to fall into the wrong crowd. The crowd that is promiscuous at a young age fulfills loneliness with physical touch. The little girl will start to think this is the only way for her to get the love she has been looking for all her life. Then she will end up pregnant at a young age or marry a man who does not love her correctly. This little girl has low self esteem because she does not know about true love.

The little boy growing up without a dad is a little different. Boys need someone to teach them to be a man. They need someone to show them how to provide for themselves and one day a family. They need someone to show them how to fix things and to use their strength for good. Boys who do not have a positive male role model have a higher chance at falling into the street life. They fall into a gang or a group of kids who do drugs and party. They are focused on providing in a negative way instead of doing something great to help make the world a better place. The boy will more than likely grow up to disrespect women. He will have a lot of anger and resentment with an "I don't care" attitude about life.

A lot of people reading this may be thinking they know a child who needs a positive male role model. The child may not have a dad and the mom is working hard to provide and trying to do both roles. The world should come together to help these children by guiding them and helping them to become good people. Some day these children will be in charge of the world. Hopefully they will be a good influence and give or invent things that can move everyone's lives in a positive direction. However, without the proper guidance the lives of fatherless children might just perpetuate more unhappiness.

9 Ways To Support Your Teen


For many years at SuperCamp, parents would ask us if we could start a program for them, to help them learn what their child is learning at SuperCamp. A few years ago we started Parent Weekend, an intensive three-day parent program that coincides with the final three days of a 10-day Junior Forum or Senior Forum at the same location. The parents who attend love it, including graduating with their children on the final day.

In addition to exposing parents to many of the learning and life skills their sons and daughters discover at SuperCamp, we also talk with parents about how they can support their children at home. Here are nine great tips we share with parents of Senior Forum students, also known as “teens”:

1. Really listen. Don’t try to listen while doing something else. Put your chores aside so your teen knows you are paying attention.

2. Take the long view. Remember, minor mishaps aren’t major catastrophes. All incidents provide opportunities to practice good communication. Often, categorizing incidents according to their importance will help keep responses and consequences appropriate. Choose only the most important issues to evoke the strongest consequences.

3. Make time for being together. Find activities you enjoy doing together and pursue them. If your invitation gets turned down, keep trying!

4. Tolerate differences. View your teenager as an individual distinct from you. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t state your opinion if you disagree.

5. Respect your teen’s privacy. Just because he/she wants to keep their door locked, doesn’t mean he/she is doing anything you wouldn’t approve of. But if a behavior is worrying you, speak up!

6. State facts instead of opinions when you praise or discuss problems. Ask your teen to demonstrate “Open the Front Door” – a communication tool we use at SuperCamp.

O - is an objective observation about the situation.

T – is a thought or opinion about what you observed.

F – is a feeling you had about what you observed.

D – is what you want, your desire or outcome of the situation.

Practicing this together is great for keeping the doors open!

7. Ask your teen about his/her learning style. Knowing there are differences goes a long way toward explaining why we have problems understanding and communicating with some people and not with others. When you know what cues he/she picks up on most easily (visual, auditory or kinesthetic), you can take steps to help him/her learn faster and more easily.

8. Support a positive attitude about learning. Create a positive study environment that includes appropriate reference materials, music and reminders that he/she is intelligent (like old report cards, awards, notes from teachers). It is also helpful to demonstrate your own positive feelings about learning.

9. Celebrate success! Positive feedback goes a long way to encourage repeat behavior. Each accomplishment by a family member deserves acknowledgement, whether verbal or by means of a special treat, like a trip to the movies, a special dessert, or posting on the bulletin board.

Homemade Tips for Hair Dyes


Take henna powder, around 4-5 tbsp if you want to apply it only around the area which has gray hair and more if you want to apply to your entire scalp. Make a thin paste of henna powder by adding juice of lemon, a tbsp of curd, a tsp of coffee powder (optional), the water of tea leaves and amla mixture which you prepared earlier. Add ½ tsp of mustard oil in this mixture to avoid dryness. Leave this mixture in an iron vessel for about 2 hours. During winter season you add a finely grounded paste of 2 cloves to elude cold. Apply the mixture on the hair carefully, cover gray hair completely. Leave this on for about 3-4 hours. (Some prefer to keep it overnight.) Then rinse off with water.

Mix coffee powder in the water and make a paste of henna with the water. Beat the egg yolk and mix this into henna. Also add brandy to it. Apply the paste and leave it on for 3-4 hours before washing it with lukewarm water.

If your goal is to cover grey hairs, try making a mixture of rosemary and sage. Mix the ingredients in water and allow them to simmer for about a half hour. Once it has simmered, remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to steep for a few hours. Apply to the hair and let it dry completely. Then wash and rinse your hair with your normal shampoo. When it has dried, you will see the results. If you want the hair darker, make another mixture and repeat the process.

Take 3 parts of litharge and 2 of quicklime, mix thoroughly; keep in a well stopped bottle. When used mix with water or milk, apply to the hair, and envelope in an oil-skin cap fur 5 or 6 hours.

The only things I can think of are peroxide and bleach for blonde, but both are not so good for your hair. Beet juice tends to stain your hands, but it would probably make your hair purple and come out the next time you wash it.

Dishwashing soap can effectively remove hair dye stains, especially when mixed with either baking soda or lemon juice. Simply rub over the area until the stains fade. If you want to be a red head, consider using kool aid for your homemade hair dye. This gives a very vibrant shade of red, depending on how it is done. Mix the powder with a little water and apply to the hair. Allow the mixture to sit on the hair. The timing will depend on how bright you want the color. You can reapply this mixture if you want the red to be a darker shade.

Milk Mask is one if the easiest and cheapest mask. Moist some cotton wool with milk and rub it on the face. Avocado is a naturally affluent moisturizer. Mush the meat of the avocado into a creamy texture. Massage into the face and neck. Leave on for 15 minutes and gently wash off. The best face mask made included fresh pineapple, organic oats and acacia honey. Take 3 tablespoons of oats and blend in mix till a fine powder. Add in a tablespoon of honey and three big slices of pineapple sheared into small pieces. Blend until a fine paste. Apply with a mask brush and retire for fifteen minutes - it may cause blemishes to tingle slightly but this is okay. Rinse with warm water.

We want to be more intelligent, wiser, smarter, a quick thinker, and brainier. But what if you were born with a particular level of IQ? Will you be content? At this day and age, you can already do something about your IQ. There are now means and ways to better yourself, maximize your brain power and increase your intelligence.   9. Chunk your meals. Eating every few hours provide your body and your brain needed nutrients without bombarding your system with sugar. When you eat huge amounts at a time, the sugar you consume goes to your stomach and away from your brain where it is needed the most.

What Causes Stress ? One Technique That Helps


You are obviously stressed - right? Stress is all about not being able to cope with the stuff you feel you have to do. If someone tells you to 'chill out', you feel like punching them because you just can't 'chill out'. If you could, you wouldn't have stress, would you? Maybe you start on one thing but another thing pulls you off the first thing because you feel it is more important. Then you think of something else that needs to be done urgently.....then another... and so it goes on. Many stressed people run about like headless chickens, flitting from one thing to another without achieving anything but stressing themselves. STOP. Just try this and see if it helps. First of all, take a deep breath and realise that world will still go on without us if we drop down dead now. It is a sad fact that the things that you did not do, someone else will do - whether it is at work, or in the home. That is life - it continues without you. Second, sit down and make a list of all the things you need to get done or the things that are urgent. Third, put them in order with the most utterly, completely urgent one at the top and the rest in order of urgent-ness. Now, focus on that top one and leave the rest until it is done. Remember, life will go on without you, so you can only do your best at any particular moment. Go and do that now. If you want to come back and read more, you can at another time. You will feel so much better when you know that you have accomplished the top thing that is causing you stress. Then you can concentrate on the next one, but not yet.... wait until you have done the one causing you the most stress.

Can Listening to Music Help Us Work Better?


There are many people who like to listen to music while they work and I am certainly one of them. I find it helps me focus more on the task at hand. Of course I can imagine that there are people who listen to music because it helps them NOT to focus on their job.

Whilst there may be many reasons for wishing to listen to music in the workplace, can it really improve your productivity?

We know that music can alter your mood. Films have been using musical scores for years to create the right mood for a scene. At times you hardly notice the music at all but you are very receptive to the mood being conveyed. So can we use music to put us in a "productive" mood?

Research seems to support such a claim. For example, a trial where 75 out of 256 workers at a large retail company were issued with personal stereos to wear at work for four weeks showed a 10% increase in productivity for the headphone wearers. Other similar research conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois found a 6.3% increase when compared with the no music control group.

So if we accept that music does increase productivity, does it matter what types of music we listen to? Does all music have the same effect or are certain types better in certain circumstances?

If your goal is to increase your concentration then music which has a constant, easy beat and light melodies are recommended. These are said to be good for those trying to study as they help you pace your reading to aid focus and memorising. Baroque music is reported as an excellent example, especially the works of Vivaldi, Bach and Handel.

Rock music can have a similar effect. According to a report in the journal Neuroscience of Behavior and Physiology, the Russian Academy of Sciences discovered that a person's ability to recognize visual images, including letters and numbers, is faster when either rock or classical music is playing in the background.

If you are aiming to be more productive through being more relaxed, then you may be interested to learn that research has shown that music with an upbeat rhythm can reduce stress hormone levels by as much as 41%.

Some of the most publicised studies into whether listening to music increases productivity have centred on what has been termed the "Mozart effect". The term got its name after a study showed that college students had performed better solving mathematical problems when listening to classical music. The effect of listening to Mozart does not appear to be limited to humans either. Apparently cows will produce more milk if Mozart is played.
